Nanowrimo success is about mental preparation…

…not just outlines and character backstories. (Although those help!)

To avoid overwhelm and stick to your writing routine through the ups and downs of the November challenge, you’ll need mental and emotional fortitude.

Under the pressure of so many rapid and relentless deadlines, it can be easy to get discouraged.

Don’t go it alone!

Hi, I'm Joy

Hi, I'm Joy

Creativity coach for writers

Succeeding as a writer is as much about developing emotional resilience as crafting the perfect narrative arc. As a creativity coach, I help authors work through struggles that are common to all creatives, like writer’s block, the inner critic, perfectionism, resistance, and imposter syndome. Having studied memoir and plumbed the depths of my psyche over the last 10 years, I’ve been there! Your work matters, and I’m committed to helping you get past psychological pitfalls so you can finish your work and share it with the world.

Take the first steps today!

Creativity coaching can set you up for success by helping you:

  • Identify your habitual writing roadblocks in advance
  • Make a plan to adapt to difficulties during the challenge
  • Strategize productive ways to procrastinate

A coaching programme with Joy gave me new perspectives on my writing. We exchanged on time management, setting priorities, writing tools and more. I especially enjoyed her positive approach and that she searched for concrete ideas to fit my situation.”

Why work with a creativity coach?

When I was pregnant with my second child, my midwife recommended 8 weeks of birth preparation classes. I wondered, “Why so many? Doesn’t my body know what to do? Won’t I know what to do the second time around?”

She shook her head. “No matter how much experience you have, birth is like a marathon. You don’t just wake up the day of the race prepared to do it.” She gestured to her body. “Everyone thinks the prep work happens here. But the real work”–she tapped her forehead–“happens in here.”

Birthing a novel is like a marathon, too. Especially when attempting to churn out a full draft in one month! Many are tempted to take the whole race at a sprint, which leads to failure and exhaustion.

The risks of going into Nanowrimo without support?

Overwhelm

The prospect of producing 50,000 words in a month could overwhelm any writer. The beginning and the middle of the challenge can feel especially daunting.

Creativity coaching is especially well suited for helping clients with daily practice. I help clients break down massive projects into small, doable tasks. Hitting the wall? Check in by email in between calls so we can find a strategy that works better for you.

Burnout

There’s a real risk of getting sick of your novel when you spend so much intensive time on just one project. You will get tired of sitting at your desk. You may start to hate writing itself!

Working with a coach can help you reconnect with your passion for your project and find a deep sense of meaning in the process of this challenge, no matter what the outcome.

Isolation

You’ll need to avoid distraction if you’re going to produce 1600+ words a day for 30 days straight. A lot of us go into our own world when we’re in that blessed state of flow. People in your life might not understand this disappearing act.

Other Nano writers will get it, but they have their own work to get on with. A coach can provide that connection back to the real world to help you stay centered.

Perfectionism

This is my personal self-sabotage area of weakness. We’ve all got one–some old mechanism from our past tha keeps us in our same place when we’re right on the the cusp of a big breakthrough or change. Don’t let these demons get the last word in!

Perfectionism and preciousness have no place in a challenge with this breakneck pace. Coaching can reassure you that you are still on track even in the midst of mistakes and messiness!
